John Glenn, the first American astronaut to orbit the planet, the third and oldest American to reach space, is a guy who has worn several hats during his life. He was a loyal countryman who served in the United States Military, Navy, and Marine Corps before becoming a renowned hero. He led and flew several successful missions during World War II and the Korean War. He became a test pilot soon after and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for his non-stop supersonic transcontinental flight from Los Angeles to New York, which set a new world record. Later, he was recruited by NASA. On board the 'Friendship 7' spaceship, he successfully completed three orbits around the Earth, making him the first American to do so. He then left NASA to become the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Governmental Affairs and a United States Senator from Ohio. Throughout his time in the Senate, he pushed vehemently against nuclear weapons. Among the various accolades and decorations he has won are the NASA service medal, the Congressional Space Medal of Honor, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
