He wasn't a part of the September 2019 Egyptian protests, which happened in Cairo, Alexandria, and Damietta, yet the police nonetheless abducted him that evening. He was being held by the police at the time of the demonstration since the conditions of his probation required him to remain in detention for 12 hours each day. He was set go, but the police later detained him, abducted him, and he was never seen again. His family conducted an investigation and made public all facts they could. They discovered that he was being imprisoned without being charged after being re-arrested by the State Security Prosecution. Additionally, when he arrived at Tora Prison, where they kept him for the rest of his term, he was tormented by convicts.
He speaks both Arabic and English. He was able to achieve British citizenship through his mother's status as a citizen while in prison in 2022. After achieving the status of dual citizenship and being denied access to British government officials, he began a hunger strike in April 2022. In May it was reported his health had greatly deteriorated and that the prison officials were not allowing him to seek medical attention. The last information known about his condition in June of 2022 implied that both his family and he believed he would die in prison if the Egyptian government continued to deny the UK's requests for amnesty.
