The fourth and final child born to William du Pont, Jr. and Jean Liseter Austin, he spent his youth on his family's estate in Newtown Township, Pennsylvania. In 1983, he married Gale Wenk, a physical therapist sixteen years his junior; the marriage ended after Wenk alleged that Du Pont had held her at gunpoint.
