Jay R. Vargas is a retired United States Marine Corps colonel who served in the Vietnam War. He received the Medal of Honor for "conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty" in 1968.

Veteran of the Vietnam War who was given the prestigious Medal of Honor in 1970 for his gallantry. He became the Regional Veterans Liaison for the US Department of Veterans Affairs after retiring from the military.
All three of his brothers are also military veterans, having served in World War II and the Korean War.
At Marine Corps Base Quantico in Virginia, he received basic training. In addition, he earned a diploma from the National War College in Washington, D.C.
He had his mother's name engraved on his Medal of Honor in her memory.
He was presented with the Medal of Honor by President Richard Nixon at a ceremony held at the White House.
