James Dewey Watson is an American molecular biologist, geneticist, and zoologist. In 1953, he co-authored with Francis Crick the academic paper proposing the double helix structure of the DNA molecule. Watson, Crick and Maurice Wilkins were awarded the 1962 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine "for their discoveries concerning the molecular structure of nucleic acids and its significance for information transfer in living material". In subsequent years, it has been recognized that Watson and his colleagues did not properly attribute colleague Rosalind Franklin for her contributions to the discovery of the double helix structure.Watson earned degrees at the University of Chicago and Indiana University . Following a post-doctoral year at the University of Copenhagen with Herman Kalckar and Ole Maaløe, Watson worked at the University of Cambridge's Cavendish Laboratory in England, where he first met his future collaborator Francis Crick. From 1956 to 1976, Watson was on the faculty of the Harvard University Biology Department, promoting research in molecular biology.

James Watson's About

[]

James Dewey Watson is a molecular biologist, geneticist, and zoologist from the United States. He is credited with co-discovering the molecular structure of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), which is responsible for inheritance. Other biologists and Nobel laureates have called his work "the most important scientific discovery of the twentieth century." His parents, James D. Watson and Jean Mitchell, raised him in Illinois. James Dewey Watson spent hours bird-watching as a child and planned to specialize in ornithology, but Erwin Schrodinger's book "What is Life" had such an impression on him that he ultimately selected genetics. He graduated from the University of Chicago with a B.S. and Indiana University with a Ph.D. He was adamantly opposed to the idea that genes were proteins capable of replication and that DNA was merely a tetranucleotide that supported the genes. James believed that DNA was the genetic molecule, persuaded by the findings and lectures of the period. With Francis Crick and Maurice Wilkins, he finally found success when the three identified the double helix structure of the DNA molecule. In 1962, James Dewey Watson, Francis Crick, and Maurice Wilkins were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for this discovery.
