Edmund Barton's About

[]

Sir Edmund Barton was Australia's first Prime Minister and a staunch supporter of federalism and an unified Commonwealth. He was also a staunch supporter of free commerce without the imposition of customs and taxes. He began his political career as a member of the 'University of Sydney' electoral division of the Legislative Assembly. Later, he was assigned to the districts of Wellington and East Sydney, where he also served as a Legislative Assembly speaker. He was a member of George Dibbs' administration at first, but eventually switched to Henry Parkes' party. His buddy Richard O'Connor and his successor Alfred Deakin backed him up in his fight to have federal policy written into the constitution. With his growing popularity, he was chosen Prime Minister of Australia in the early 1900s. He stayed in office for around two years, enacting significant reforms before quitting to create the High Court of Australia, where he served as a judge until his death. This illustrious politician was awarded four knighthoods, but only one of them was accepted. Many people still admire him, and various localities in Australia have been named after him as an homage.
