Gia Long was born on February 8, 1762 (age 58) in Hue, Vietnam. He is a Celebrity Emperor. Gia Long was the first emperor of the Nguyen dynasty and the progenitor of the modern-day Vietnamese country. He was the nephew of the last Nguyen ruler who ruled over southern Vietnam and was born as Nguyen Phoc Anh. Despite being born into a royal family, he had several challenges in his early years, as he became the target of competing factions seeking to eradicate the Nguyen clan entirely. After his father and uncle were killed by rival leaders, Nguyen Phoc Anh escaped to the southern coast of Vietnam, where he met Pigneau de Behaine, a French priest who would later become his valued adviser and play a key part in his ascent to power. He fled with the priest's help and subsequently sought French assistance in his fight against his competitors. He was successful in obtaining wins over his opponents with the support of the French and armed with superior European munitions. He proclaimed himself emperor and took the name Gia Long. For the first time in millennia, he gave his country the contemporary name of Vietnam, and for the first time in centuries, the country was united and independent of outside interference. He was a careful ruler, a devout student of Confucius' teachings, and a huge fan of Chinese culture. According to numerology, Gia Long's Life Path Number is 8.
