She continued to perform and record far into the 1990s, with provocative stage antics and a sarcastic attitude. She had a contralto voice and was first promoted as an R&B and doo-wop singer, but she broke through as a classic pop vocalist who sang jazz and pop music standards. Her amazing voice was displayed to great effect in tracks like At Last, Dance With Me Henry, and I'd Rather Go Blind, which were always soulful. Etta James continued to suffer from health problems as she approached her seventies, finally succumbing to Leukemia.
