She was born and raised in Bismarck, North Dakota. She is a distant relative of Victoria Woodhull, the first woman to run for President of the United States. 

She began competing in pageants when she was a child, competing in Little Miss North Dakota, Miss Pre-Teen North Dakota, and Miss Junior Teen North Dakota. Prior to and during her pageant adventures, she earned a bachelor's degree in business, entrepreneurship, and organizations from Brown University in 2016. She was a member of the Kappa Delta sorority.

She was crowned the winner of Miss North Dakota in 2017 and the winner of Miss America in 2018.
