Cleo Virginia Andrews was born on June 6, 1923 (age 63) in Portsmouth, Virginia, United States. She is a celebrity novelist.
Her second attempt, which she supposedly completed in only two weeks, would be the work that would catapult her into the zeitgeist: a novel titled Flowers in the Attic. Her first book would stay unpublished until it was released posthumously in 2004 directly to e-book. The book, which was the earliest example of the genre that would encompass the most of her subsequent works, was about a group of kids who were kept captive by their mother and grandmother for the majority of their childhood in an attic. Her work was mostly comprised of Gothic horror tales with family saga aspects. When Flowers in the Attic was released in 1979, it topped bestseller lists in less than a month.
She was born into a middle class family: her mother a telephone operator and her father a trades craftsman in the skill of tool-and-die making. She was the youngest of three with two older brothers.

Born Cleo Virginia, she would go by the pen name C.V. Andrews. She had significant back injuries in a high school accident involving stairs that, despite attempts at corrective surgery, left her with persistent arthritis for the remainder of her life. Throughout the years, she needed wheelchair or crutches to move about. After her father passed away in 1957, she finished a correspondence degree in drawing, which helped her family financially until she switched to writing in her 50s. At 63 years old, she died in 1986 from breast cancer-related complications.
Her series of novels were so popular that after her death, her estate hired a posthumous ghostwriter Andrew Neiderman to finish two manuscripts on the behalf that were published under her name. He would continue to underwrite new stories and series spin-offs based on her works, still under her name, with another release set for October 2022 called Eden's Children and another for 2023 called Little Paula. Her novels have been translated into over 15 languages.
